A list of upcoming weekly live music in events in Nashville

Live Music Week of August 12 through August 18 2013

Standard

8/12/13     The Time Jumpers     3rd and Lindsley Need I tell you again…go!

8/13/13     Doyle and Debbie     Zanies I saw this show when it was at The Station Inn and loved it.  They’ve now spent some time in Chicago and have come back to Nashville’s comedy central.  Go and be prepared to have a laugh!

8/14/13     Christ West and the Junkyard Horns     fooBar I just saw Chris playing on the streets of the Tomato Art Fest this past weekend, a couple of weeks ago I’m pretty sure I saw him playing with Mike Ferris at Nashville Dancin.  He plays with everyone so this will be a great treat to see him playing in a small club with his own band.  He’s monster and plays with only the best!

8/15/13     Erin McCarley, The Mowgli’s, Matt Nathanson     Live On The Green “I’ve been in love with love and the idea of”  I love this song and it’s the Mowgli’s and Erin McCarley is also wonderfully cool! I love her song “Elevator”.  Neither of these are even the headliner so what does that tell ya?

8/16/13 East Nashville Underground     The East Room Be the hippest of the hipsters and see some great live music. ‘

8/17/13     The Long Player’s     Mercy Lounge Always high on my list of must see’s and they are covering Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” This show often sells out so get your tickets early.

8/18/13     The Cult     Marathon Music Works I was a little surprised to see that they were playing at this venue, although it’s one of my favourite new venues in Nashville.  I remember seeing them in the 80’s opening for Aerosmith and enjoyed every minute.  They will be playing “Electric” in it’s entirety according to the press release

Tguitar girl mexicoOnce again I took a few weeks hiatus. I could give you many excuses but as they say, “you can’t change your past” so onward and upward!

7/29/13     The Time Jumpers     3rd and Lindsley

Rumour has it, and by rumour I mean The Nashville Scene, Vince Gill will be in town and playing with The Time Jumpers tonight.

7/30/13     Will Rambeaux, Sherrie Austin & Friends     The Bluebird Cafe

I used to cover Sherri Austin’s song “Lucky in Love” “back in the day” and I was always a fan of her voice. Will Rambeaux has had a bunch of cuts and I always enjoy hearing the original songwriter in a great intimate setting.

7/31/13     John and Jacob, Kansas Bible Company   Music City Roots

I really love John and Jacob’s single that has been played relentlessly on Lightning 100 and they are adorable. It’s absolutely infectious!  Word on the street is that Kansas Bible Company is the band to see these days and I just want to see them fit them all the stage and figure out what they all are doing up there.

8/1/13     Korby Lanker     The Basement

I have mentioned Korby in previous posts and he is as cute as a button with fun and singable pop songs.  (What’s up with me and cute “boys” these days…)

8/2/13     The Hags-Silverman Ordeal Jerry Garcia Birthday Celebration     The Family Wash

I was sent an invitation via Facebook that cordially invited me to this event so I feel very special.  I am a fan of East Nashville’s own “Hags” bass playing so this should be a fun night, even though I’m not a fan of the Grateful Dead. Sorry anyone reading this who thinks that’s not a kosher thing to say!

8/2/13     Benefit for Luella and the Sun, Justin Townes EarleMike Farris, Webb Wilder     Mercy Lounge

I just love how people in this town pull together to help each other. It makes my heart feel good and the bonus is the music will be good.

8/3/13     Old Crow Medicine Show with Buddy Miller     The Woods at Fontanel

I will be there kicking up dust with the rest of the Hippies and Hipsters but I’m really excited to see the great Buddy Miller once again!

8/4/13     Brooke Waggoner     3rd and Lindsley

Love her, go see her!

Nashville Live Music June 24 to June 30, 2013

6/24/13     Larry Cordle and Friends     The Station Inn

I ended up at the Station Inn last Monday night for New Mondays with Val Storey.  It was one of the most brilliant nights of music I have been to at the Station Inn and I never come away disappointed at this venue.  The following Mondays are not billed the same but I imagine they will be just as wonderful.

6/25/13     Drivin n Cryin     Belcourt Theatre

I read about this documentary about the band and live concert in the Nashville Scene and think it’s definitely the “best bet” for a Tuesday night no doubt!

6/26/13     Wooten Brothers     3rd and Lindsley

This is always a fun time with a variety of guests showing up as well as a great dance floor available to all who wish to dance in the fabulous new layout of 3rd and Lindsley.

6/27/13     Josh Ritter with Milk Carton Kids   Cannery Ballroom

I just love the name of Josh’s opening act but I love their music even more.

6/28/13     The Malemen     Frist Fridays

This is a summer event that’s always a good time.  The theme is cars so the first week features Motown music, put your dancing shoes on!

6/29/13     Ruby Amanfu & Brooke Waggoner     Musicians Corner Centennial Park

Two wonderful singers with good songs.  I love the park atmosphere even if the sound isn’t always the best and there’s always a new musical find at this season weekly event.

6/30/13     Bob Dylan, My Morning Jacket, Bob Weir, Wilco     Riverfront Park

I don’t like Bob Dylan, yes I said it, but it’s kind of a no brainer that if you have the opportunity to see and hear him locally you’d better take it.

6/30/13     Duffy Jackson’s Big BandThe Time Jumpers     3rd and Lindsley

I once took a scat class from this man and it was amazing.  This is a benefit for an incredible drummer who has played with many of the giants of jazz.

6/17/13     Gordon Lightfoot     Schermerhorn

It’s been a while since I’ve put in a plug for a Canadian, so here it is, and what a Canadian he is!

6/18/13     Lightning 100’s Beer, Bands, Bingo     Tin Roof Nashville

Play bingo with the folks at my favourite radio station in Nashville.  You will also be playing band roulette because I have no idea who will be playing but Lightning 100 shouldn’t let us down.

6/19/13     Shel    Two Old Hippies

I adore these women and their cool hats and even cooler attitudes.  Excellent musicianship that’s unique and fun.  Bonus…it’s FREE! Don’t worry, I also think you should go to Music City Roots and hear Marshall Chapman if you didn’t catch her last week.

6/20/13     Vince Gill     Ryman Auditorium

Known as the nicest guy in Nashville but also one of the best guitar players too. I can’t imagine what a great show this would be at the Ryman with his history in Nashville and his plethora of hit songs.

6/21/13     Jen FosterPatrice Pike     The Listening Room

Yes I work for her, but  I am also a fan and the last time I saw Patrice Pike play with her at 12th and Porter I was blown away, so come on down and say hello, I will definitely be there!

6/22/13     Nashville Tour de Fat      Centennial Park

This looks like a whole lot of fun and lasts all afternoon along with Musicians Corner then head back over the river and come salsa dancing with Revolfusion and support Nashville’s first ESL truck at East-Centric Pavilion  Meet The Truck Party.

6/23/13     Tennessee Blues Society Jam     Carol Ann’s

Someone from the Blues Society recently followed this blog and a friend told me this is a good time so head on over to this weekly Sunday event.

Live Music Week of June 10 through June 16 2013

Standard

This last week was filled with a whole bunch of great music.  I went to Music City Roots on Wednesday to see Jacob Jones and discovered Black Jake and The Carnies.  Saturday afternoon I spent the afternoon at Centennial Park and Musicians Corner excited to finally catch Striking Matches, who have been tearing up Nashville stages recently, and was treated to a short performance by my new favourite, bow tie wearing, pop songwriter, Korby Lenker. Saturday night a last minute invitation got me out the The Family Wash in East Nashville to finally see Kevin Gordon, I am now a believer! Sunday night had me singing along to every Dawes song at The Ryman and witnessing one of the best open acts and audiences I have ever seen with Shovels and Rope

Even with Bonaroo going on this upcoming week there is still a whole lot of great music to catch right here in Nashville and a great way to experience Bonaroo if you can’t go for the whole week.

6/10/13     The Time Jumpers     3rd and Lindsley

6/10/13     8 off 8th with Kristen Cothron and more     Mercy Lounge

6/10/13     Val Storey, Carl Jackson & Larry Cordle     Station Inn

6/10/13     Mike Henderson Band     Bluebird Cafe

Monday is usually  a good night in Nashville if you are in the mood to head out to hear some music.  Usually I would just choose one but the above shows are pretty much always happening weekly, so pick your flavour tonight!

6/11/13     Jason Isbell     Grimey’s New & Preloved Music

Grimey’s is above The Basement and often has a short set with a variety of different artists, local and passing through.  Tomorrow (Wednesday) Marhshall Chapman will be at Grimey’s Too which is right next door.  Shows usually start at 6pm.

6/12/13     Gary Talley and The Road Home     Music City Roots

I had so much fun at the Loveless Barn last week as I knew I would.  This week I want to give a shout out to my former guitar teacher and member of  The Box Tops.

6/13/13    Donna The Buffalo, Tommy Malone, 18 South, The Lonely Biscuits      Nashville Dancin    Riverfront Park

This is the first night for Nashville Dancin, a long awaited replacement to Dancing In The District.  I can’t wait to check it out.  This is a great lineup, you might remember my previous experience seeing 18 South for the first time.  If not read about it here:

6/14/13     Symphony Under The Stars     Centennial Park

There are only a few opportunities to get to see the Nashville Symphony play outside and for free.  With all the hooplah about the selling of the Schermerhorn it might be the best way to spend your Friday night before the opportunity goes way!

6/15/13     Booker T Jones     Frankin Theatre

Booker T and the M.G.’s, Green Onions, really do I have to spell it out for you! Just go.

6/16/13    Kacey Musgraves, Sam Bush & DelMcCoury, Tom Petty, Drew Holcomb, John Oates  Bonaroo Day Trip

I’m not sure why they have created a shuttle this year but for the faint of heart like me, a whole week at Bonaroo sounds like a good idea but in reality it’s not happening.  If I had to pick one day to go to Bonaroo this  year Sunday would be the day.

Live Music Week of June 3 through June 9 2013

Standard

6/3/13     Keb Mo Monday Night Blues Show Farm at Fontanel

I discovered Mr. Moore opening for Bonnie Raitt a number of years ago and have been hooked on him ever since.  The last concert I saw him at was at The Ryman for his 60th birthday and he was more than amazing.  The great thing about living in Nashville is knowing people who work with great artists like him, and I do.  So I have not only received an autographed CD from him for a recent birthday but I also sat next to him and his son at 3rd and Lindlsey and he bought me lunch! Not only talented, but a kind man as well. Okay I’m bragging, sorry.

6/4/13     The Players     3rd and Lindsley

Check out this lineup – Brent Mason, John Hobbs, Paul Franklin, Eddie Bayers, and Michael Rhodes. Don’t know who these guys are?  Then go and you will never wonder again.   These guys could “play me” anytime! 🙂

6/5/13     Jacob Jones, John England and the Western Swingers     Music City Roots

I love his song “Play it Loud Ray” that I keep hearing on Lightning 100 and I recently caught his set at Hootenanny.  I’ve heard he keeps the swing dancers happy at the 5 Spot weekly and I almost saw him again Saturday night but just couldn’t stay up that late so thank goodness for an early show this Wednesday at the Loveless Cafe.  I know I say I’ll be there most weeks but I’m thinking it’s a sure thing this Wednesday!

6/6/13     Symphony Under The Stars     East Park

I love and hate this time of year.  So much to hear and see and so little time.  I can’t imagine a better way to spend a Thursday night and it’s right here in my neck of the woods!

6/7/13     Pat McLaughlin Band     Douglas Corner Cafe

If I had my way I’d spend every night out enjoying the amazing music that is to be found nightly in Music City.  I came late to the game discovering the intensely soulful  Pat McLaughlin (see my previous post) but I’m so grateful I know who he is now.

6/8/13     Rory Partin and His All Star Big Band Dancing in Centennial Park

There are only a few weeks every summer that we get a chance to dance underneath the stars to a live big band.  This will be the first week since they cancelled the June 1 event.  There are two dance lessons each week.  The first one starts at 7. My suggestion is to come to the park early and check out Striking Matches at Musician’s Corner, grab dinner at a food truck, bring a blanket for a nap on the grass, then head to the Pavilion!

6/9/13     Dawes     Ryman Auditorium

By far my favourite new band from the past few years.  I think the lead singer sounds like a young James Taylor and I am always a fan of great singable melodies.

Live Music Week of May 20 through May 26 2013

Standard

5/27/13     The Time Jumpers     3rd and Lindsley

Check out any number of my previous posts for why I think this is the best thing going for a Monday night or just believe me and go.  You might actually see me there!

5/28/13     Joshua O’dine     The Basement’s New Faces Nite

I have a resentment toward this guy because he held me up one New Year’s Eve when I was running sound at Cafe Coco. However, I remember him as being uber-talented so I will let it go and suggest you check him and a number of other great up and coming artists out at this weekly event.  This is a favourite Nashville venue that I need to add to my list.

5/29/13   James Otto, Striking Matches     3rd and Lindsley

Although Steve Martin, Edie Brickell & Steep Canyon Rangers at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center was my first pick, I couldn’t get tickets, atleast without missing a car payment!  I will however settle for my new favourite band who you just aren’t going to stop hearing me talk about for a while, sorry.  James Otto is no slacker himself either.

5/30/13     Kristen Cothron      Springwater Supper Club

Kristen is another singer, songwriter, artist who has been on my radar for a number of years.  Her soulful and sultry performance can be seen on a regular basis these days at The Springwater.  The Springwater Supper Club, as they call it, is one of the oldest musical establishments in Nashville but don’t be fooled if you haven’t been there before, it’s a dive bar with a stage. Still a fun hang for a Thursday night.

5/31/13     12 Against Nature: A Steely Dan Experience     3rd and Lindsley

I haven’t seen this band but it’s been recommened to me by a friend, Roy Agee has been known to play trombone with them and it’s one of my favourite venues in town and, oh yea…they play Steely Dan!

6/1/13        Nashville in Harmony     TPAC

I have always thought I should join a chorus in Nashville and perhaps one day I will. I think this would be my first pick.  As their website says, they “use music to build community and create social change”. This will be the last show of the season after they take their message to the streets from Knoxville to Nashville.

6/2/13     Paul Kelly with Striking Matches     3rd and Lindsley

I just can’t get enough of this duo and it’s Lightning 100‘s “Nashville Sunday Night” Be aware though, you have to go to the venue to hear Striking Matches.  Paul Kelly will be the only one featured on the radio show, pity.

Live Music Week of May 20 through May 26 2013

Standard

5/20/13     Sheryl Crow & The Fisk Jubilee Singers Music City Center

Day two of  the grand opening of Nashville’s new Convention Center downtown . I checked the place out yesterday and it is BIG.  I think day one was a great success and I loved the use of all the great live music Nashville has to offer throughout the whole opening.  From small duos in the hallways to the Symphony playing the Grand Ballroom. I got catch a little bit of Music City Blues and the Soul Choir as well as a hear Phil Vassar sing the JoDee Messina song he penned “Bye Bye”

5/21/13     Guitar Man tribute to Jerry Reed     3rd and Lindsley

I remember Jerry Reed as a little girl and how funny he was but as a grown up I’ve discovered he was one heck of a guitar player too.  I became friends with his daughter a few years ago and Iknow how proud she was of her dad.

5/22/13     Striking Matches    Music City Roots at The Loveless Cafe

If  you read this blog on a regular basis (Mom, Melissa, Keith maybe) you know this is my new favourite band and  Music City Roots is pretty much always my go to for a Wednesday night.

5/23-25/13     Cirque Musica     Schermerhorn Symphony Center

I am not exactly sure what this will be but I have tickets for Saturday night.  I know it has something to do with Cirque De Soleil and it involves the Nashville Symphony so I am pretty sure it will be awesome.

5/24/13     Etta Britt      3rd and Lindsley

Etta is getting some well deserved recognition these days.  She’s a powerhouse of a vocalist who you have probably heard many times as a background singer.  Friday at 3rd and Lindsley is a great chance to see & hear her in the forefront.

5/25/13     Street Corner Symphony and Alanna Royal      Musicians Corner (Centennial Park)

I fell head over heels with Street Corner Symphony and acappella music watching the Sing Off with Ben Folds (who I also learned to really appreciate watching that show).  I also think East Nashville’s own Alanna Royal is the bomb and I haven’t had a chance to catch her live yet. Take a chair or blanket and prepare to have a very enjoyable afternoon.

5/23-26/13    Darrell Scott, Tim O’Brien, Kevin Welch    Jamminathippiejacks.com

Okay this is a weekend long event and it’s not exactly in Nashville but the lineup is awesome and it’s the best time of year to go camping in this part of the world.  I hope Darrell Scott is playing on Sunday, amazing songwriter, instrumentalist…wow!

Live Music Week of May 13 through May 19 2013

Standard

5/13/13     Lyle Lovett     Schermerhorn Symphony Center

I have loved Lyle Lovett’s music forever and I saw him last year with John Hiatt.  Seeing him live and experiencing his infectious personality only made me even more excited about a show with him and his acoustic band.

5/14/13     The Breeders     Cannery Ballroom

I had never heard of this band before but they were highly recommended by a good friend whose musical taste I trust.  Not my most favourite venue but a good place for a Tuesday night.

5/15/13     Brian Ashley Jones     Music City Roots at The Loveless Cafe

I was introduced to the music of  Brian by a former roommate when we had a party in our backyard.  This long time road warrior is getting some well deserved recognition by the Nashville community.  The rest of the lineup will most likely be great too especially since Jim Lauderdale pretty much always opens up the show.

5/16/13     Jeffrey Steele and Friends     3rd and Lindsley

This is a benefit for the Brentwood YMCA.  It’d be great if you would support it because they often hire one of my clients, Mr. Bond, The Science Guy!  It’s always a party when Jeffrey Steele is in the house but the list of friends performing will make this one heck of a night. Charlie Crow, Phil Barton, Travis Howard, Kurtis John, The Shuggah Pies, Jimmy Stewart and more…

5/17/13     Brandi Carlile with the Nashville Symphony     Schermerhorn Symphony Center

If you have not heard this incredible vocalist you are in for a HUGE treat.  I can only imagine how amazing she will sound backed by the incredible musicians that make up the Nashville Symphony.

5/18/13     The Avett Brothers     Bridgestone Arena

I first saw this band at an Americana festival at Montgomery Bell Park.  I was talking with a friend and they hit the stage and we stopped, stared and were hooked.  I called them bluegrass punk and since then I have seen them many times including standing on a fence behind Grimey’s during Record Store Day just to catch a glimpse. This will be my first large arena experience with the Avetts and although I’m not a fan of this size of a show I’m pretty psyched.

5/19/13     Phil Vassar and Ten Out of Tenn     Music City Center

Sunday and Monday will be the grand opening of the gigantic Convention Center in downtown Nashville.  They have two nights of music slated to introduce Nashville to the Center at its grand opening.  Should be an incredible extravaganza.
